Robotic pool cleaners scrub and filter on their own, independent of your pool’s pump. The big decisions are cordless vs. corded, which surfaces you need cleaned (floor, walls, waterline, even the surface), and whether the robot is rated for your pool’s size. Makers rate robots by floor area or pool length, and we list whichever each one publishes.[1][5]

Cordless or corded?
Cordless robots are easy to drop in and lift out, with no cable to tangle, but they’re limited by the battery. Beatbot rates the AquaSense 2 at up to 4 hours on the floor.[1] Corded robots like the Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus draw power from a poolside unit, so there’s no battery to wear out, but you manage a cable. Its 60 ft swivel cable is designed to resist tangling.[5]
Floor, walls, waterline, surface
Basic robots clean the floor. Better ones climb the walls and scrub the waterline, where oils and sunscreen leave a ring.[3] A few, like the AquaSense 2 Ultra, also skim the surface, which matters most for pools under trees.[2]
Size it right
Makers rate pools differently: Beatbot and Aiper by floor area, Maytronics by length.[1][4] Use our size checker. If you’re near a robot’s limit, size up, because walls and steps add cleaning time.
Care that keeps them running
- Rinse the filter basket after each cycle.
- Keep it out of direct sun when it’s not in use, and charge cordless models as the maker directs.
- Don’t leave a robot in during shock treatments.
- Untwist corded cables now and then, even with a swivel.
Questions buyers ask
Do I still need to run my pool pump?
Yes. A robot filters debris but doesn’t circulate water or distribute chemicals the way your pump and filter do.
Will a robot clean my steps?
Many struggle with steps and benches. Expect to brush those occasionally.
How long does a cordless robot run?
It depends on the model and mode. Beatbot rates the AquaSense 2 at up to 4 hours on the floor and 3.5 hours on walls and waterline.[1]
Are pool robots sold on Amazon?
Many are. We link to Amazon and to each maker’s store so you can compare prices.
